The 2025 restoration of Toronto’s Allan Gardens Palm House changed a route for maintenance workers: the catwalk high in the dome. Zeidler Architecture’s project account describes a new, wider walkway to help workers reach the upper structure. All three domes also received new fritted glass. Zeidler reports that engineers at RJC studied heat and sunlight to determine the glass treatment’s placement and intensity, aiming to manage solar heat gain. [1][2]
At ground level, another maintenance route shared space with the public entrance. The restored eastern portico received a projecting entry bay and double doors. They provide barrier-free entry, but they also admit heavy machinery needed for maintenance and programming. Zeidler and heritage architects AREA drew on the earlier entrance design, including details associated with the transoms above the sandstone base. [1][2]

The renewed enclosure did not simply bring back the old arrangement of planting beds. Friends of Allan Gardens records the Palm House reopening on 17 May 2025 and describes its temporary use as a flexible space for horticulture and community gatherings, at least until a proposed greenhouse link is built. The organisation hopes to restore large central beds in the future so towering palms can make fuller use of the dome’s height. The glass and access work is complete; that planting arrangement remains an ambition. [3]
